Many people put websites up in order to try and make money but find that actually it isn't that simple. There are a couple of methods to do this.
These are graphic or text links that link to an advertiser's website (hopefully not a competitor) but rather another website that compliments your own.
These are text or graphic links as above except that they are served up automatically by Google.
You are probably aware of Pay per Click advertising. These are the sponsored links at the top and side of Google search pages. These ads are paid for by advertisers on a per click basis, i.e. if someone clicks on an ad the advertiser is charged for that click.
What Adsense does, is to pay you a percentage of that cost per click, if someone clicks on an advertiser's ad whilst it is being displayed on your site. Cool huh?
The value of the clicks varies by search term and some search terms are very lucrative as they generate very high costs per click i.e. insurance can generate costs per click as high as $50.00.
Google Adsense doesn't actually disclose how much revenue share you get but if you consider that some people are making a living from it, it can be very generous on a website with high traffic and relevant content.
So how do you get this Adsense thing to work so that you can make money from your website.
