Server Side Scripting is basically a programming language which enables your web pages to more interactive. The main Server Side languages are Active Server Pages (ASP), PHP HyperText Preprocessor (PHP), Java Server Pages (JSP) and Coldfusion (CFM).
Each of these languages has pros and cons, which will be explained in another article but what they all do is allow a web page to interact by connecting to databases and files, processing and validating forms and serving page data dynamically.
This site is a good example of what a Server Side language can do for a site. All the information on this site is stored in a database and we can add, change or delete the information using any web connected PC with Internet Explorer installed. Where we have email contact forms, those web pages will validate your input then convert the form content into a mail and send it to our mail server.
Other examples of the use of server side scripting is e-commerce enabled web site with product catalogues, order forms and payment processing.
The World Wide Web has evolved and so has the people who use it. There are higher expectations from surfers for some sort of interactivity or 'intelligence' when using a web site, the days of brochureware sites are numbered.
