Firstly let us explain what META tags are, these are HTML tags that are found within the HEAD section of a HTML page.
These tags were used in the early days of the web to describe the web page and to what keywords it should be indexed under by search engines.
Unfortunately, unscrupulous web designers exploited these by using descriptions which were not relevant to the actual content on the page and/or keyword spamming i.e. repeating the same keyword multiple times in the META KEYWORD tag.
Needless to say that the Search Engines took these tags less seriously when indexing web pages but that is not to say that you should neglect to use them. Some Search Engines still place some relevance on the content of these tags, though this is usually only part of how the Search Engine indexes and ranks the page so do use them.
Don't cram all your keywords and descriptions on every page but to write the description and keywords to be relevant to the content on the page.
