Using Fonts on your Web Site

Posted in Design by 3wise Solutions with 0 comment(s)

The biggest crime against web design is quite often the overuse of different fonts or the use of non-standard fonts on a web site.

Here are some general rules that you should follow:-

  • Do not use more than three different fonts
  • It is recommended that for body text you use a sans-serif font i.e. Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, etc as these have been proven easier to read
  • Try to use Tahoma or Verdana for large bodies of text as these fonts were especially designed to be read from a screen
  • Do not mix sans-serif and serif fonts i.e. Roman and Arial. There are a few exceptions to this rule such as a logo being of a Roman type face and the body text being sans-serif.
  • Try not to go overboard with font sizes for headlines as these use up valuable screen space.
  • Restrict the use of colours in text. Using colours to highlight words could confuse users in to thinking it was a hyperlink.

On the whole, styling a web site is down to common sense. Present the user with clearly legible text and obvious navigation and you can't go wrong.
